Russian Attacks on Ukrainian Cities Result in Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage

A recent Russian attack in Kryvyi Rih left a 41-year-old woman hospitalized in critical condition, as reported by Oleksandr Hanzha, head of the regional military administration. The assault caused damage to administrative buildings and local infrastructure.

In addition to Kryvyi Rih, Russian forces targeted Dnipro during the day, resulting in further infrastructure damage. Hanzha also indicated that in the Nikopol region, Russian strikes have affected industrial facilities, residential buildings, and vehicles.

Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state railway company, reported that a Russian strike hit the railway infrastructure in Kryvyi Rih. While there were no injuries reported, the railway station sustained minor damage.

Russian military forces have consistently targeted Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various types of weaponry, including drones, missiles, and multiple launch rocket systems. Ukrainian authorities and international organizations classify these attacks as war crimes, asserting that they are deliberate in nature.

Attacks on essential services and healthcare facilities, aimed at depriving civilians of electricity, heat, water supply, communication, and medical assistance, are viewed as indicators of genocidal actions. Legal experts and human rights advocates argue that Russia’s actions during the ongoing war encompass various forms of crimes that could be classified as genocide against the Ukrainian people.

Specific allegations include public declarations of intent to eliminate Ukrainians as an ethnic group, with Russian officials asserting that Ukrainians do not exist as a distinct nationality and that those who disagree should be eradicated. Other reported actions include targeted attacks on essential services, persecution of pro-Ukrainian individuals in occupied territories, and the systematic destruction of Ukrainian culture and identity.

The 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, obligates its 149 member states to prevent and punish acts of genocide during both wartime and peacetime.

The Convention defines genocide as actions aimed at the complete or partial destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Indicators of genocide include the killing of group members, causing serious bodily or mental harm, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to bring about a group’s destruction, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children from one group to another.

The Russian leadership denies that its military conducts targeted strikes against civilian infrastructure, claiming that such allegations are unfounded.

Recent Russian attacks in Ukraine have resulted in civilian injuries and significant damage to infrastructure. Authorities classify these strikes as war crimes, raising concerns about potential genocidal actions against the Ukrainian population.
