Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen regarding the unblocking of a €90 billion support package for Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized that these funds would not only bolster Ukraine but also benefit the entire European continent, urging for prompt disbursement.
In a message on Telegram, Zelensky stated, “All necessary steps from Ukraine’s side have been taken” to facilitate the release of these funds. The talks also included discussions on initiating negotiation clusters for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and continuing sanctions against Russia.
As of now, there has been no public comment from von der Leyen regarding the conversation. Prior to this, Zelensky reported a discussion with European Council President Charles Michel about the same financial package, during which Michel expressed gratitude for Ukraine’s compliance with agreements related to the repair and operational restoration of the Druzhba oil pipeline.
On April 21, Zelensky indicated that Ukraine had completed repair work on the Druzhba pipeline, which is now poised to resume operations. This development is part of broader efforts to enhance Ukraine’s energy security amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Additionally, following the recent parliamentary elections in Hungary, Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party, indicated that he would lift the veto imposed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the €90 billion loan to Ukraine. However, Magyar clarified that Hungary would not bear financial responsibility for this loan and expressed opposition to accelerating Ukraine’s EU accession. He conditioned the normalization of relations with Kyiv on the protection of the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
Ukraine is actively pursuing a €90 billion support package from the EU, with discussions involving key European leaders. The talks also address Ukraine's EU membership aspirations and ongoing sanctions against Russia, while Hungary's political landscape may influence financial support dynamics.
