A recent incident in the Uzhhorod district of Zakarpattia has raised concerns about the influence of Russian security services on Ukrainian youth. On April 16, a teenager opened fire in a school, injuring a classmate. Authorities have indicated that the assailant was reportedly recruited through online gaming platforms.
Miroslav Biletsky, head of the Zakarpattia Regional State Administration, emphasized the alarming trend of foreign operatives exploiting minors. He stated, “The enemy does not hesitate to use any methods in their fight against our people, even involving children in their criminal activities.” This incident follows another close call in the village of Bushytino, where a student attempted to bring a knife to school.
Biletsky noted that both incidents were linked to the actions of Russian security services, which he claims are actively seeking ways to manipulate and intimidate young individuals into committing crimes. In response, a virtual meeting was held involving representatives from the National Police, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), local education departments, and child protection services. The aim was to encourage schools in the region to hold parental meetings with law enforcement officials.
During these meetings, parents will be informed about the tactics used by Russian operatives in cyber warfare, particularly how they target minors. Biletsky highlighted the importance of recognizing psychological pressure on children and ensuring their safety.
In light of these events, security measures have been increased in several schools across Zakarpattia. Officers have been deployed to ensure student safety, and metal detectors have been installed at school entrances.
On the day of the shooting, police reported that a student had fired shots in a school, resulting in injuries to a classmate. Video footage from police body cameras later captured the moment the shooter was apprehended.
