An investigation has been initiated regarding the actions of two police officers present at the scene of a recent shooting in Kyiv, where they reportedly failed to intervene and fled the area. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the inquiry in a video statement, emphasizing the need for accountability and a thorough review of police protocols.
Zelensky stated, “A criminal case has been opened concerning this incident, and a complete examination of the patrol officers’ conduct is underway. They were expected to act in that situation. The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) is handling this case, while the Security Service of Ukraine and the National Police are jointly investigating the attack, including the assailant’s background and how he obtained his weapon.” He added that the Minister of Internal Affairs would make personnel decisions based on the findings.
As a result of the shooting, which occurred on April 18 in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, eight individuals are currently hospitalized, with one in critical condition. Zelensky confirmed that all necessary medical assistance is being provided.
The attack unfolded when an unidentified man opened fire on pedestrians, resulting in the deaths of four individuals on the street. Following the shooting, the assailant barricaded himself inside a supermarket, where he continued to hold hostages. A fifth victim was found deceased inside the store. The shooter was neutralized during a police operation.
Subsequently, one of the injured women, approximately 30 years old, succumbed to her injuries in the hospital, bringing the total death toll to six, with 14 others injured.
The criminal case has been initiated under Article 258, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to acts of terrorism resulting in fatalities. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the shooter was a 58-year-old native of Moscow who used automatic firearms during the attack.
