Ukrainian President Zelensky to Receive Four Freedoms Award in the Netherlands

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to arrive in Middelburg, Netherlands, on April 16 to receive the prestigious Four Freedoms Award. This accolade is presented in recognition of significant contributions to the principles of freedom as articulated by U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941.

Zelensky will accept the award on behalf of the Ukrainian people during a ceremony attended by notable figures, including King Willem-Alexander, Princess Beatrix, and Prime Minister Rob Jetten. The event underscores international recognition of Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for freedom and democracy amidst its current challenges.

Following the award ceremony, Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Jetten to discuss potential collaborations, including the joint production of drones and other areas of cooperation. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening support from the Netherlands for Ukraine.

The Four Freedoms Award honors individuals or organizations that have made significant strides in upholding the four essential freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. These principles were first articulated by Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union address.

  • Freedom of speech.
  • Freedom of worship.
  • Freedom from want.
  • Freedom from fear.

Past recipients of this award include prominent figures such as Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, and Angela Merkel, all recognized for their efforts in promoting these fundamental freedoms. Each award is accompanied by a monetary prize, which laureates typically allocate toward charitable and humanitarian initiatives.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will receive the Four Freedoms Award in the Netherlands, recognizing his leadership and Ukraine's fight for freedom. The visit will also include discussions on enhancing cooperation between Ukraine and the Netherlands.
