The British government has announced a significant new defense aid package for Ukraine, which includes a commitment to deliver at least 120,000 drones throughout the year. This announcement was made on April 15, coinciding with Defense Minister Jon Healey’s visit to Berlin for a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
According to the government statement, this package represents the largest drone supply ever provided by the UK. It comprises thousands of long-range strike drones, reconnaissance and surveillance drones, logistical drones, and maritime systems that have been tested in combat conditions in Ukraine. Deliveries of these new drones have already commenced this month.
London emphasizes the critical role of drones in supporting Ukrainian counteroffensives along the front lines in recent months, as well as in defending against ongoing Russian attacks. The UK government also noted that most of the investments associated with this package will benefit British companies, including Tekever, Windracers, and Malloy Aeronautics, which is expected to create new jobs in the UK while bolstering Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.
Healey remarked that the provision of a substantial number of battle-tested drones will enhance the capabilities of Ukrainian forces in their defense against Russian aggression. He stated, “As attention has shifted to the Middle East in recent weeks, Putin wants us to be distracted, but the Ukrainians continue to fight with tremendous courage, and nothing will distract us from standing with them for as long as it takes to secure peace.”
The drone package is supported by funding from the European Union’s Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration mechanism. Additionally, Healey is expected to confirm the UK’s intention to provide hundreds of thousands of artillery shells and thousands of air defense missiles to Ukraine this year.
