Belgium and Spain Commit €2 Billion in Military Aid to Ukraine

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced on April 13 that Belgium and Spain will each provide €1 billion in military assistance to Ukraine this year. This announcement follows discussions with his Belgian counterpart, Theo Francken, and Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles.

During the conversations, Fedorov emphasized the synchronization of key areas for collaboration, particularly in enhancing air defense capabilities, developing drone technology, and the Czech initiative aimed at supplying long-range artillery to the front lines.

Belgium has confirmed its intention to deliver additional F-16 fighter jets and provide spare parts for existing aircraft. This commitment marks a significant step in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict.

In discussions with Spain, the focus was on advancing defense cooperation within the European SAFE mechanism. Ukraine proposed the opportunity to test Spanish drones in combat conditions, indicating a willingness to foster partnerships with Spanish manufacturers.

Fedorov stated, “We are prepared to provide a list of manufacturers that can establish cooperation with Spanish companies. Additionally, we have offered the chance to test Spanish drones in real combat scenarios.” This initiative reflects Ukraine’s proactive approach to enhancing its military capabilities.

In March, Fedorov mentioned that Ukraine would also receive additional Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets from France. While the timeline for this delivery remains unspecified, it was previously discussed during a meeting in February between Fedorov and French Minister for Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Catherine Colonna.

Ukraine is set to receive €2 billion in military aid from Belgium and Spain, including F-16 fighter jets and enhanced drone capabilities. This collaboration aims to strengthen Ukraine's defense amid ongoing conflict.
