Opposition Party Tisa Wins Hungarian Elections, Secures Constitutional Majority

The opposition party Tisa, led by Peter Madyar, has emerged victorious in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, securing enough seats to form a constitutional majority in the National Assembly. According to the National Election Office, results from 98.93% of the votes counted indicate that Tisa received 69.35% of the votes, translating to 138 mandates, surpassing the 133 required for a constitutional majority.

In addition to Tisa, two other parties have gained seats in the parliament: Fidesz, led by Viktor Orban, garnered 27.64% of the votes, resulting in 55 mandates, while Our Homeland, led by Laszlo Toroczkai, received 3.02%, securing 6 mandates.

With 98.94% of the votes counted, Tisa candidates have won in 93 out of 106 electoral districts. The official vote counting is mandated to conclude no later than six days after the elections, which were held on April 12, with the final results expected by April 18. The last votes to be counted typically include those from overseas voters and those who voted outside their registered districts.

Voter turnout for the elections reached a record high of 79.5%. Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who leads the Fidesz party, has acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Madyar on his victory.

In his victory speech, Madyar announced plans to restore cooperation with NATO and the European Union, particularly with the Visegrad Group countries. He also stated that his first official visit would be to Poland.

The opposition party Tisa has won a decisive victory in Hungary's parliamentary elections, enabling it to form a constitutional majority. Peter Madyar's leadership marks a significant political shift, with plans to enhance ties with NATO and the EU.
