Progress Reported in Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks

Negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow are reportedly making headway, with expectations that a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine may be reached soon. This was stated by Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence.

Budanov expressed optimism about the talks, indicating that they are not likely to be prolonged. He noted, “Everyone understands that the war needs to end, which is why negotiations are underway. I don’t think it will take much time.”

The official acknowledged that both sides have maintained “maximalist positions” during the discussions facilitated by the United States, but he believes they are gradually moving towards a compromise. He emphasized that Russia, as the aggressor, has a clear incentive to finalize an agreement.

“Unlike us, they are spending their own money. These are enormous sums—already in the trillions,” Budanov remarked.

However, he refrained from detailing what a potential compromise on territorial issues, which are among the most contentious in the negotiations, might entail. Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported, citing Kremlin sources, that the talks have reached a stalemate, with both sides maintaining positions that remain unacceptable to each other.

In related news, Budanov mentioned that recent strikes on oil terminals in Russia are influencing the negotiation process, suggesting that Ukraine will hear “a lot of new things” from the Russians in the upcoming discussions.

Recent statements from Ukrainian officials indicate that peace negotiations with Russia are progressing, with expectations of a resolution soon. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding territorial disputes.
