During a sermon on Holy Thursday, April 9, Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church mistakenly congratulated parishioners on the Feast of Epiphany, which is celebrated in January. This error occurred as he spoke for approximately five minutes about the significance of the Epiphany before realizing his mistake.
It was only after being presented with an open book containing the correct text that he acknowledged the day, stating, “And today we celebrate Great Thursday.” He then shifted his focus to the current church celebration.
The official website of the Moscow Patriarchate later published a revised version of his sermon, omitting all references to the Epiphany. Kirill, who is 79 years old, has been a vocal supporter of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. Reports have emerged suggesting that he may be experiencing cognitive difficulties related to his age, although this information has not been officially confirmed.
