Sweden Releases Tanker Linked to Russian Oil Spill Investigation

On April 5, Swedish authorities released the tanker Flora 1, which had been detained on April 3 due to suspicions of causing an oil spill in the Baltic Sea. The Swedish Coast Guard reported that no evidence was found linking the vessel to the alleged incident.

The Flora 1, flagged under Cameroon, was initially suspected of operating under a ‘false flag.’ However, Cameroon confirmed the vessel’s registration, which limited the grounds for continued detention.

This tanker is included on the European Union’s sanctions list for transporting Russian oil and engaging in what has been described as ‘irregular and high-risk shipping practices.’ These practices may involve disabling automatic tracking systems that communicate the vessel’s location to other ships.

The Ukrainian government has identified Flora 1 as owned by a Hong Kong-based company. In addition to EU sanctions, the vessel is also subject to restrictions imposed by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and New Zealand.

Reports indicate that the tanker has been observed disabling its tracking system, which conceals its location, and engaging in ship-to-ship transfers, a method that may obscure the origin of its oil cargo.

On the morning of April 3, the Swedish Coast Guard detained the Flora 1, which was carrying 24 crew members, and anchored it near the town of Ystad. The incident has prompted discussions within the European Union regarding the potential strengthening of sanctions against vessels transporting Russian oil in violation of existing restrictions. The UK has also announced plans to intercept ‘shadow fleet’ tankers within its waters.

Sweden has released the Flora 1 tanker, previously detained over an oil spill allegation, after finding insufficient evidence. The vessel remains under scrutiny due to its ties to Russian oil transport and ongoing sanctions by multiple nations.
