EU Official Stresses Importance of Standard Membership Criteria for Ukraine

The European Commission has reiterated the necessity of adhering to established membership criteria for Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union. This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about Ukraine’s unique situation due to the ongoing war.

European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Marta Kos, emphasized that granting exceptions would undermine trust in the enlargement process. She stated, “Exceptions for your country would not help or strengthen it, as it would erode confidence in the entire process and your future membership.”

Kos highlighted that Ukraine’s accession should enhance the EU, necessitating a comprehensive transformation of its society and economy. The Commissioner noted that the EU is actively accelerating procedures for Ukraine, but the timeline for membership is contingent upon the pace of internal reforms.

“Every reform brings Ukraine closer to EU membership. When reforms speed up, accession approaches; when they slow down, the timeline extends accordingly,” she concluded.

Ukrainian authorities have set an ambitious goal to sign an EU accession agreement by 2027. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for a definitive date for joining the EU, asserting that a clear membership timeline would signify a strategic defeat for Russia and enhance security for Europe.

In Brussels, officials have indicated that expedited procedures will not be available without the completion of all necessary reforms. Kos previously described the target of joining the EU by January 1, 2027, as ambitious yet understandable, while noting that the European Commission is exploring ways to facilitate this scenario.

Despite pressure from Kyiv, skepticism remains within the EU regarding the feasibility of Ukraine’s 2027 accession, due to the complexities of the negotiation process and the need for a full transformation of Ukrainian legislation.

The European Commission has reaffirmed that Ukraine must adhere to standard membership criteria for EU accession, emphasizing the importance of internal reforms. While Ukraine aims for a 2027 membership goal, skepticism persists regarding the feasibility of this timeline amidst necessary legislative changes.
