Ukraine Faces Renewed Airstrikes Amid Heightened Tensions

In the early hours of April 3, air raid alerts were issued across multiple regions of Ukraine due to the threat of Russian drone and missile strikes. Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Poltava, among other areas, resulting in casualties.

Prior to the attacks, monitoring channels on Telegram had warned of an increased risk of air strikes and the takeoff of Russian strategic aviation. The Ukrainian Air Force reported movements of drones and missiles targeting regions including Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and several locations in Kyiv, with explosions noted in towns such as Ukrainka and Obukhiv.

As of 2 PM, the Ukrainian military reported the destruction or suppression of 541 aerial targets, including 26 missiles and 515 drones. A total of 579 attack vectors were recorded as launched from Russia, including:

  • 10 Iskander-M ballistic missiles (launched from Kursk and Rostov oblasts);
  • 25 Kh-101 cruise missiles (launched from the airspace over Samara oblast);
  • 2 Iskander-K cruise missiles (launched from Rostov oblast);
  • 542 strike UAVs, including types such as Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, from various locations including Bryansk, Kursk, Oryol, Shatalovo, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Russia), and occupied Crimea, with over 330 identified as Shahed drones.

Reports confirmed hits from 11 missiles and 27 strike drones across 20 locations, along with debris from downed drones impacting 22 areas.

In response to the Russian assault, Poland scrambled its military aircraft and placed ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance units on high alert. The Polish Armed Forces stated, “These measures are preventive and aimed at enhancing security and protecting airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to threatened zones. The operational command is monitoring the current situation, and appropriate forces remain ready for immediate response.”

Impact of the Attacks

Following the strikes, reports surfaced of power outages in several districts of Kyiv. DTEK Kyiv Electric Networks announced emergency power cuts. The head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Mykola Kalyshnyk, confirmed that one person was killed and eight others injured in the Kyiv region, with damage reported in Obukhiv, Bucha, and Fastiv districts.

In Obukhiv, a Shahed drone struck a residential building. Additionally, around 20 animals were killed at a veterinary clinic in Chabany due to the attack.

In Kharkiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, debris from a Shahed drone caused injuries, and several vehicles caught fire, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. He noted that two individuals were in serious condition. By midday, a total of eight injuries had been reported, including a two-year-old girl who experienced acute stress reactions.

The head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Djakivnych, reported drone debris in the Myrhorod and Poltava districts, causing damage to private properties and a farm.

In Korosten, Zhytomyr region, at least four explosions were heard during the attack, with local residents observing smoke rising over the city. The head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Bunechko, later confirmed at least one fatality from the attack.

“Currently, one person has been confirmed dead, and four injured individuals were rescued from under the rubble. Preliminary reports indicate damage to at least 15 residential buildings. Search and rescue operations, fire extinguishing, and damage mitigation are ongoing,” he stated on Telegram.

Subsequently, Bunechko reported that 18 buildings were destroyed in the northern part of the region, including nine residential structures. Over 100 residential buildings, more than 55 agricultural facilities, and two shops sustained damage.

In the Vinnytsia region, eight private homes were reported damaged, with windows blown out due to the shockwave from the explosions, according to the regional military administration head, Natalia Zabolotna.

Updates on the situation are ongoing.

On April 3, Ukraine experienced a series of airstrikes from Russia, resulting in multiple casualties and significant damage across several regions. The Ukrainian military reported extensive interceptions of aerial threats, while Poland heightened its military readiness in response to the escalating situation.
