Zelensky Discusses Ceasefire Proposal with U.S. Officials

On April 1, President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged in discussions with representatives of former U.S. President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, concerning a ceasefire proposal for the upcoming Easter holidays.

The talks, which also included Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, focused on Ukraine’s suggestions for a ceasefire, security guarantees, and the involvement of European partners.

Zelensky emphasized the need for robust security guarantees for Ukraine, stating, “I have instructed our team to provide an updated framework to ensure that security guarantees are strong and that the prospect of post-war reconstruction is realistic and actionable.” He noted the rapid changes occurring globally and the implications for alliances and security challenges.

According to Zelensky, U.S. representatives expressed their willingness to collaborate on finding compromises to end the conflict. He remarked, “The key is how and what we all discuss with Russia, and how prepared the documents are, particularly regarding security guarantees, so that Ukrainians clearly understand how partners will respond in the event of renewed Russian aggression and what will deter Russia from further aggression.”

He also expressed hope that Ukrainian and U.S. teams would work together soon to ensure that progress is felt by all parties involved.

Background:

  • In recent days, discussions surrounding Ukrainian territories in the context of ending the Russia-Ukraine war have intensified. On March 25, Zelensky claimed that the U.S. offered security guarantees to Kyiv only in exchange for the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the non-occupied parts of Donbas.
  • Following this, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio labeled Zelensky’s statements as false.
  • Zelensky maintained that during negotiations, the U.S. signaled a readiness to provide security guarantees after Ukrainian forces withdrew from Donbas.

President Zelensky held talks with U.S. officials about a ceasefire proposal and security guarantees for Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia. The discussions included key figures from both nations and aimed to strengthen Ukraine's security framework.
