EU Foreign Ministers Call for Accountability for Russian War Crimes in Ukraine

European Union foreign ministers have reiterated the necessity for Russia to be held accountable for war crimes committed in Ukraine. This statement emerged following an informal meeting held in Kyiv and Bucha, where officials gathered to honor the victims of violence during the ongoing conflict.

The joint declaration emphasized the importance of addressing atrocities such as mass killings, torture, sexual violence, and forced deportations that have occurred, particularly during the Russian occupation of the Kyiv region. The ministers, alongside Ukrainian representatives, paid tribute to those affected by these violations of international humanitarian law.

Additionally, the statement expressed support for the establishment of a Special Tribunal to address the crime of aggression against Ukraine, as well as an International Compensation Commission dedicated to assisting Ukraine. The need for investigations by the International Criminal Court into war crimes was also highlighted, with the ministers asserting that accountability is crucial for achieving a just and lasting peace.

“On the fifth anniversary of Russia’s aggressive war, we reaffirm our unwavering and steadfast support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” the declaration stated.

On March 31, EU parliamentary speakers and foreign ministers visited Ukraine for the Bucha Summit, coinciding with the anniversary of the city’s liberation from Russian occupation.
