Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently announced a series of significant agreements aimed at enhancing security and defense collaboration with several Middle Eastern countries. Following his visits to the region, Zelensky emphasized the positive reception Ukraine received from its partners, highlighting a shared commitment to work together on defense and energy initiatives.
In his evening address, Zelensky described the visit as productive, noting the respect and support expressed for Ukraine and its military efforts. He stated, “There is a general vision among the countries in the region to work together with our state and our defense alongside our experts.” This reflects a growing recognition of Ukraine’s capabilities and its strategic importance in the region.
According to Zelensky, the primary focus for all parties involved is security and the restoration of stability. He mentioned that Ukraine has established historic agreements with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, while also engaging in discussions with Jordan and Kuwait. Rustem Umerov, a Ukrainian official, is currently in the region to continue political negotiations, with additional requests for cooperation coming from Bahrain and Oman.
Zelensky stressed that these developments go beyond mere prestige; they are concrete and practical in nature. He noted, “We are exporting our defense systems, the skills of our warriors, and our knowledge. From these partner states, we expect corresponding security interactions.”
Specific areas of collaboration include enhancing air defense capabilities, joint development of defense manufacturing, and energy cooperation. Zelensky pointed out that this cooperation involves critical supplies such as diesel and other resources essential for Ukraine’s current needs.
On March 27, Zelensky visited Saudi Arabia, where Ukraine and Riyadh formalized a bilateral agreement on defense cooperation. Similar agreements have also been established with the UAE and Qatar. Earlier, Zelensky mentioned that 228 Ukrainian specialists are currently in the Middle East, assisting local air defense forces in countering Iranian drone threats.
Furthermore, he revealed that Ukraine has received 11 requests for security support from neighboring countries of Iran, European nations, and the United States in response to threats posed by Iranian drones and similar challenges.
Ukraine is actively enhancing its defense and security cooperation with Middle Eastern nations, having established key agreements with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. These partnerships focus on air defense, military collaboration, and energy resources, reflecting a strategic shift in Ukraine's international relations amidst ongoing security challenges.
