Ukrainian suburban trains are increasingly becoming targets of Russian military strikes, according to Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, the head of the state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia. He emphasized that these rail connections are crucial for communities near the front lines.
Pertsovskyi made these remarks during a briefing on March 24, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by suburban rail services. He noted that while these trains should be less of a focus for enemy forces, they have frequently been attacked due to their importance for local populations.
“Just last Saturday, we visited the Sumy region, where we collaborated with the regional military administration on how to safely maintain rail connections in areas such as Shostka, Trostianets, and Orikhiv, which are several kilometers from the front line,” Pertsovskyi stated.
He further explained that suburban trains in frontline areas are now targeted more often than long-distance passenger trains. This trend raises concerns about the safety of rail travel in these regions.
“I cannot explain this unhealthy interest in suburban trains. Our suburban depot in Fastiv has been completely destroyed, as well as the one in Dnipro. Perhaps the enemy is unsettled by our modern, comfortable trains that allow people in frontline communities to travel conveniently. They seem intent on cutting off these connections,” he added.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by rail services in Ukraine, particularly in regions that are vulnerable to military action. As the conflict continues, ensuring the safety of transportation infrastructure remains a priority for Ukrainian authorities.
