Ukrainian Population Faces Significant Decline Amid Ongoing Conflict

A recent report indicates that Ukraine’s population, which was estimated at over 40 million in 2014, may decrease to approximately 20 million by 2025. This alarming projection highlights the long-term demographic impacts of the ongoing conflict.

British journalist Will Lloyd traveled to Ukraine during winter to explore how the protracted war has affected the nation’s society. He observed that international coverage often focuses on military technology and strategies, yet he argues that the human toll of the conflict is of greater significance.

Lloyd describes a sense of unease that accompanies each visit to Ukraine. He notes that witnessing the struggles of the Ukrainian people evokes concerns about similar challenges potentially facing other European nations in the future.

During his visit, Lloyd met a resident of a high-rise building in Kharkiv, where the upper floors had been destroyed by a Russian missile strike in 2022. The building, now largely abandoned, was covered in snow and filled with the scent of damp concrete. The man, living alone, had lost most of his neighbors and was accompanied only by a dog tied in the courtyard and crows circling above.

In his apartment, there was no electricity or heating. The journalist cooked on a camping stove and relied on food donations from charitable organizations. The man’s demeanor reflected a struggle for survival, as he attempted to maintain composure while sharing his experiences.

Survival Amidst War

Recent data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) suggests that over 300,000 Ukrainians who had previously fled the conflict may once again become internally displaced. Many are considering returning abroad as conditions remain precarious. As of January 2026, there are approximately 3.7 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine, with over 4.4 million having returned since the onset of the war.

Last winter, Russia’s military strategy included targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leading to widespread blackouts and a lack of heating. Many residents endured harsh living conditions, with some areas of Kyiv remaining without heat for months following extensive attacks on energy facilities.
