In a recent military action, Ukrainian forces struck the Saratov Oil Refinery in Russia’s Saratov region late on March 20, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
The attack reportedly damaged a secondary oil processing unit and a vertical storage tank. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, though independent verification of these claims has not yet been possible.
The Saratov Oil Refinery, one of the oldest in Russia, had a processing capacity of 4.8 million tons for the year 2023. The AFU noted that this facility plays a critical role in refining oil and producing fuel and lubricants for the Russian military.
While Russian authorities have not confirmed the strike, Saratov Governor Roman Busargin acknowledged an attack in both Saratov and Engels. Additionally, a local Telegram channel reported explosions heard in Saratov, corroborating some eyewitness accounts.
Other regions in Russia have also reported drone strikes. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted 283 drones during these incidents.
The Saratov Oil Refinery has been targeted multiple times by Ukrainian forces, including attacks last fall. Following the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion, various facilities within Russia have faced aerial assaults, with oil refineries frequently becoming targets in 2024 and 2025. Ukrainian strikes have also been directed at Russian installations in occupied territories of Ukraine.
The General Staff of the AFU has confirmed many of these attacks, asserting that Ukrainian defense forces are systematically working to diminish the combat capabilities of Russian occupying forces and to compel Russia to halt its armed aggression against Ukraine.
On March 17, Russian Security Council Secretary and former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu remarked that no region in Russia is immune to attacks due to advancements in Ukrainian drone technology.
Ukrainian forces have targeted the Saratov Oil Refinery, causing significant damage. This attack is part of a broader strategy to weaken Russian military resources amid ongoing conflict.
