Russia Reports Significant Drone Attack Across Multiple Regions

In the early hours of March 21, Russia experienced what officials have described as the largest drone assault in a year, impacting nine districts in the Rostov region, strategic sites in Saratov, and areas approaching Moscow. Over 120 drones were reportedly involved in this coordinated attack.

The Rostov region was particularly affected, with local authorities claiming that nearly the entire area was under threat. Reports indicated that more than 90 drones were detected in the skies above this region alone.

The geographical spread of the drone activity included several districts, such as Chertkovsky, Millerovsky, Tarasovsky, Bokovsky, Milyutin, Sholokhovsky, Kasharsky, Krasnosulinsky, and Kamensky. Residents shared videos throughout the night, capturing the distinctive sounds of the drones and the bright flashes resulting from the attacks. Despite official statements claiming that all targets were intercepted, social media reports indicated fires near logistical hubs supporting Russian operations in Ukraine.

In Saratov, drones targeted locations near the Engels airbase, causing damage to residential buildings, including broken windows, and resulting in at least two injuries. The local airport, Gagarin, implemented emergency restrictions in response to the threat.

In the Moscow region, Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that air defense systems initially shot down six drones. As the attack progressed, additional waves were intercepted, leading to the downing of another 13 drones, bringing the total to 27. However, during these operations, Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports experienced disruptions, leading to delays for numerous flights. This incident marks the most extensive combined drone attack since the beginning of 2026.

Experts have noted that this attack is unprecedented in scale for the year, suggesting that the simultaneous launch of such a large number of drones across various regions strains the enemy’s air defense resources and exposes vulnerabilities in the protection of critical sites, including oil depots, airfields, and military-industrial facilities.

While the Russian Ministry of Defense reported impressive figures regarding intercepted drones, the reality of closed airports and the visible aftermath of the attacks in Rostov indicates a troubling shift, suggesting that the conflict is increasingly encroaching upon Russian territory.

A significant drone attack across multiple Russian regions has raised concerns about vulnerabilities in air defense systems. With over 120 drones involved, the incident marks the largest assault of its kind in 2026, impacting strategic locations and causing disruptions in Moscow's airports.
