Ukraine Faces Extensive Drone Assault as Air Defenses Intercept Majority of Attacks

In the early hours of March 19, Russian forces launched a significant drone attack on Ukraine, deploying over 130 strike drones. Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted the majority of these threats, neutralizing 109 drones across various regions.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that the assault involved drones of various types, including Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas, originating from multiple locations such as Bryansk and Crimea. Approximately 70 of the drones were identified as Shahed models.

Ukrainian defense capabilities were engaged in the counteroffensive, utilizing aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups. The air defense systems were able to intercept the drones before they reached their intended targets.

By 08:00 local time, preliminary reports indicated that 20 drones had struck 11 locations, with debris from intercepted drones landing in seven different areas. The Air Force emphasized that the attack was ongoing and urged the public to adhere to safety protocols.

In addition to the extensive drone assault, Russian forces targeted several Ukrainian cities, including Odesa and Lviv. In Odesa, the drone strikes resulted in damage to over a dozen buildings, including a university dormitory, and left three individuals injured. Meanwhile, Lviv’s Security Service headquarters was also hit, alongside strikes in the town of Novovolynsk in Volyn region.

A coordinated drone attack by Russian forces on March 19 resulted in significant interceptions by Ukrainian air defenses. While many drones were neutralized, some strikes caused damage in cities such as Odesa and Lviv, highlighting ongoing military tensions in the region.
