Recent reports indicate that Russia is supplying Iran with satellite imagery and advanced drone technology, aimed at aiding Iranian attacks on American forces in the Middle East. This information was disclosed by The Wall Street Journal on March 17, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation.
The technology being provided includes components designed to enhance communication, navigation, and targeting for modified Shahed drones. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also stated on the same day that there is clear evidence that Iranian Shahed drones used in the region contain Russian parts.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Russia is offering tactical advice based on its experience with drone deployment in the conflict in Ukraine. This includes recommendations on the number of drones to use in operations and the optimal altitudes for strikes. Additionally, it has been reported that Russia has recently shared satellite images directly with Iran.
This collaboration appears to extend beyond previous reports, which indicated that Russia had provided locations of American military assets in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf region. Sources for The Wall Street Journal, including a senior European intelligence officer and a Middle Eastern diplomat, suggest that Russian support has likely facilitated recent Iranian strikes against American radar systems in the region.
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) commented on these developments, stating that Russia views its assistance to Iran’s strike campaign as a means to weaken the United States, which it identifies as a primary geopolitical adversary.
Following earlier reports, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated on March 7 that Moscow had been advised against providing Iran with intelligence data amid ongoing airstrikes by American and Israeli forces.
U.S. intelligence agencies have refrained from publicly commenting on the reports regarding Russia’s intelligence sharing with Iran for operations in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned he had no information supporting claims of Russian assistance to Iran, remarking, “If this is true, they are not doing very well, as things are not going well for Iran.” The White House has also downplayed the significance of the intelligence support data from Moscow.
Russia and Iran have longstanding military, political, and diplomatic ties, with Iran supplying Russia with a significant number of Shahed drones for strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Currently, Russia primarily utilizes this technology for domestic drone production.
A joint U.S.-Israeli operation against Iran commenced on February 28, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous other high-ranking officials within the Iranian regime.
Iranian military forces have launched missile and drone attacks not only against Israel and U.S. military installations in the region but also against several neighboring countries viewed in Tehran as U.S. allies.
Russia is reportedly providing Iran with satellite imagery and drone technology to assist in targeting U.S. forces in the Middle East. This collaboration includes tactical advice and components for enhanced drone operations, raising concerns about the implications for regional security.
