Israel Seeks Dialogue with Ukraine on Countering Iranian Drones

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally requested a discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky regarding strategies to counter Iranian drones. This request highlights Israel’s intent to leverage Ukraine’s expertise in intercepting Iranian-manufactured unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel, Yevhen Korniychuk, confirmed the receipt of this request, noting that scheduling conflicts have delayed the conversation. He expressed optimism that the dialogue would occur early in the coming week.

Previously, President Zelensky indicated that Ukraine had received multiple requests for security assistance from neighboring countries of Iran, as well as from European nations and the United States, aimed at addressing threats posed by Iranian drones, including the Shahed model. Additionally, he mentioned that the first Ukrainian group tasked with providing military expertise to Gulf nations in countering Iranian drone attacks has already departed for the Middle East.

In a related context, on February 28, Israel conducted an airstrike on Tehran, marking a significant escalation in military actions against Iran. Following this, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced the initiation of a “major combat operation” against Iran, aimed at neutralizing perceived threats from the Iranian regime. He accused Iran of funding and training militants in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded by launching missiles and drones towards Israel and attacking U.S. military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

In light of these developments, French President Emmanuel Macron called for an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting to address the escalating tensions. The European Union reiterated its commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East.

Amidst these military operations, President Zelensky stated that it is justifiable to give the Iranian people a chance to rid themselves of a “terrorist regime” and to guarantee security for all nations affected by attacks originating from Iran.

On March 1, Trump claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had died, a statement later confirmed by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). Following this, the IRGC announced the commencement of a “most destructive offensive operation in the history of the Islamic Republic” against Israel and U.S. military bases.

Trump warned the Iranian regime against pursuing these plans, threatening a “very strong response.” On March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the next phase of military operations against Iran would be even more devastating.

By March 6, Trump emphasized the need for a complete change in Iran’s leadership, suggesting he had several candidates in mind for a potential “good leader.” On March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the deceased Ali Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader. Trump declined to comment on this election, stating only, “We’ll see what happens,” while previously asserting that the new Iranian leader would not last long without the approval of the White House.

Israel's request for dialogue with Ukraine underscores a growing collaboration in countering Iranian drone threats. The situation is further complicated by escalating military actions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, raising significant geopolitical concerns.
