Ukrainian Forces Enhance Drone Defense Against Russian Attacks

Ukrainian military personnel from the “Hunter” drone interception group of the 208th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade are adapting their tactics in response to evolving threats from Russian forces. The Russian military has begun deploying Shahed drones at extremely low altitudes, prompting Ukrainian forces to bolster their anti-drone capabilities and focus on interceptor drones. According to Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, over 70% of Shahed drones were intercepted in February around Kyiv and its outskirts.

The “Hunter” group, which includes two pilots, a sapper, and a driver, operates Sting drones, designed to swiftly engage enemy UAVs. The Sting, a Ukrainian development, can ascend to altitudes of 5,000 meters and is named for its ability to strike quickly, akin to a wasp or bee.

One of the operators, Oleksandr, has been part of a mobile fire group for over a year. He began his military service in Nova Kakhovka at the onset of the conflict and transitioned to a contract position after his initial service. “When I first saw the Sting, I wanted to fly it immediately. We started training on it in December 2025. Those familiar with FPV drones can easily adapt to the Sting, which is significantly faster,” he noted.

Oleksandr described the demanding nature of their workdays, especially with an increase in enemy drone incursions. His team has successfully intercepted 11 aerial targets, including two reconnaissance drones, which are particularly challenging to hit due to their small size. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and camaraderie within the group.

“The Sting operates manually, with the pilot controlling it via a computer or VR goggles, allowing for real-time flight path visualization. Weather conditions such as rain and fog reduce its effectiveness,” he explained.

Another operator, Maxim, who has served for over a year, recounted his experience of shooting down two Shahed drones. He described the difficulty of navigating in the sky without visual landmarks, relying instead on radar when targets are above the clouds. The emotional impact of intercepting a drone is significant for him, as he recognizes the potential damage it could inflict.

Eduard, a sapper in the group, has been involved in military operations since 2019. He is responsible for preparing the drones for deployment. He can ready a drone for launch in approximately 30 seconds. “When the target enters our engagement zone, I prepare the drone, and within about five minutes, it catches up to the target, as it is faster than the Shahed,” he stated.

Eduard has served in various conflict zones, including Donetsk and Luhansk, and has experienced multiple injuries. He expressed the emotional toll of separation from his family, particularly from his two-year-old daughter, Ulyana. “I hope to be allowed a few hours to celebrate her birthday tomorrow,” he said, reflecting on the personal sacrifices made during the conflict.

Both Oleksandr and Eduard shared their motivations for serving, highlighting the sense of duty to protect their country and families. Eduard’s brother also serves in the military, having transitioned to a different unit after sustaining injuries. The experiences of both men illustrate the profound changes that military service has brought to their lives.

As the conflict continues, Ukrainian forces remain committed to enhancing their defensive capabilities against aerial threats, underscoring the strategic importance of drone warfare in the ongoing struggle.

Ukrainian military units are intensifying their drone interception efforts in response to low-altitude attacks by Russian Shahed drones. The 208th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade's "Hunter" group has successfully adapted its tactics, achieving significant interception rates and highlighting the evolving nature of aerial warfare in the conflict.
