Russian Court Sentences 15 to Life for 2024 Concert Hall Terror Attack

A military court in Russia has sentenced 15 individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in a terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue near Moscow. The attack, which occurred in March 2024, resulted in significant casualties.

According to reports from local media outlet Mediazona, four additional defendants received lengthy prison sentences in connection with the case. The trial was conducted behind closed doors, and the prosecution ceased presenting evidence in December, concluding the investigative phase by early February.

The incident at Crocus City Hall unfolded on March 22, 2024, during a concert by the band Picnic. Gunfire erupted inside the venue, which was also engulfed in flames, leading to the collapse of the roof. At the time, approximately 6,200 attendees were present, as the venue was fully booked, according to ticketing site RedKassa. Official figures from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations indicate that at least 143 people lost their lives in the attack.

While Russian authorities have attributed the attack to Ukraine, officials from Ukraine’s military intelligence agency have dismissed these claims, labeling the incident a deliberate provocation orchestrated by Russian security services under President Vladimir Putin’s direction. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has also rejected the accusations.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack, although Russian security agencies have not ruled out the possibility of Ukrainian involvement or collaboration with ISIS.

In the aftermath, Russian law enforcement announced the arrest of 11 suspects, including four Tajik nationals believed to be directly involved in executing the attack. Additionally, four foreign nationals were reportedly detained in Dagestan on April 1, accused of financing and supplying weapons to the terrorists. In total, the Russian Investigative Committee has charged 19 individuals in connection with the incident.
