Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the United States has requested assistance in defending against Iranian drones, known as “Shaheds,” in the Middle East.
In a statement shared on social media, Zelensky said, “We received a request from the United States for specific support in protecting against the Shaheds in the Middle East.” He emphasized the importance of providing necessary resources and ensuring the presence of Ukrainian specialists to guarantee safety.
Zelensky added, “Ukraine helps partners who assist our security and protect the lives of our people. Glory to Ukraine!” This announcement comes amid ongoing discussions about military cooperation between Ukraine and the U.S.
Prior to this, Bloomberg reported that Zelensky had proposed sending top experts in intercepting Iranian drones to the region, contingent upon Russian President Vladimir Putin agreeing to a month-long ceasefire in the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, media sources indicated that the U.S. and at least one Gulf nation are negotiating the purchase of Ukrainian interceptor drones to bolster defenses against the Iranian Shaheds.
CNN has also noted that U.S. military officials view the Iranian Shahed drones as a significant challenge, expressing concerns that existing air defense systems may not be capable of intercepting all of these threats effectively.
