The Slovak transmission system operator, SEPS, has announced its intention to terminate its emergency electricity supply contract with Ukraine. This decision comes in light of a directive from the Slovak government, as stated by SEPS Director Martin Magat.
According to Magat, the last instance of emergency electricity being supplied to Ukraine occurred in January. He noted that Ukraine had requested urgent electricity supplies after Slovakia had imposed a ban, but these requests were not fulfilled.
The request for the unilateral termination of the contract was made by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. He announced this decision on February 23, citing the halt of Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline as a significant factor. Fico indicated that electricity exports to Ukraine would cease until Ukraine restored operations on the Druzhba pipeline.
In response to the impending termination of the emergency supply, representatives from Ukraine’s national energy company, Ukrenergo, stated that the cessation of electricity supplies from Slovakia would not adversely affect the situation within Ukraine’s unified energy system.
Additionally, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has also threatened to stop electricity supplies to Ukraine. Prior to these developments, both Budapest and Bratislava had halted diesel fuel exports to Ukraine.
Slovakia's decision to end its emergency electricity supply contract with Ukraine follows a government directive linked to the suspension of Russian oil supplies. While this move has raised concerns, Ukrainian officials assert that it will not impact their energy system significantly.
