Mojtaba Khamenei Set to Succeed Father as Iran’s Supreme Leader

Following the death of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, his son Mojtaba Khamenei is poised to take over leadership, according to reports from local media. The decision was made by the Assembly of Experts, a constitutional body responsible for electing the Supreme Leader.

Sources indicate that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) played a significant role in pressuring the Assembly to expedite the selection process, aiming to prevent political instability in the wake of Khamenei’s passing.

Interestingly, there has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding this succession, leaving the situation somewhat ambiguous.

Mojtaba Khamenei is a prominent Shia cleric and one of Ali Khamenei’s sons. Over the years, he has emerged as a key figure in Iranian politics, largely due to his close ties with the IRGC leadership.

He received his education at the Alavi School in Tehran, which is traditionally attended by the children of high-ranking officials in the Islamic Republic. Mojtaba is married to the daughter of Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, a notable political figure.

His formal religious education began at the age of 30 in Qom, Iran’s most renowned Shia seminary. Mojtaba’s influence in politics became more pronounced in the mid-2000s, although media coverage of his role has been limited. He gained attention during the contentious presidential elections of 2004 when a leading candidate accused him of covertly supporting Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Since the 2010s, Mojtaba Khamenei has been regarded as one of the most influential figures in the Islamic Republic, despite not holding any official government position. Analysts have frequently speculated about his potential succession, raising concerns that a transfer of power from father to son could transform the republic into a political dynasty.

As reported by Reuters, Mojtaba is aligned with the hardline conservative faction in Iran, similar to his father, and has publicly endorsed strict policies against regime opponents and foreign adversaries. In 2019, he was sanctioned by the United States.

Bloomberg reported in January that Mojtaba Khamenei manages a substantial investment empire and has access to Swiss bank accounts and elite British real estate valued at over $100 million.

Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to succeed his father as Iran's Supreme Leader, following a decision by the Assembly of Experts. His rise raises concerns about the potential establishment of a political dynasty in Iran.
