In a recent emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, Russia criticized the military actions of the United States and Israel, labeling them as “reckless” and calling for an immediate ceasefire in the region.
Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, expressed these sentiments during the session, despite Russia’s own controversial military actions in various conflicts. He described the operations conducted by the U.S. and Israel as “aggressive” and urged for a halt to hostilities in the Middle East.
“We demand that the United States and Israel immediately cease their actions. We insist on restoring efforts based on mutual respect and a balance of interests,” Nebenzya stated.
Interestingly, Russia also offered to provide any necessary assistance for negotiations, a move that has been dubbed “diplomatic surrealism” by observers, given Russia’s role as an aggressor in other conflicts.
Experts suggest that Nebenzya’s fervent defense of Iran stems from a pragmatic fear. For Russia, Iran is not just a political ally; it serves as a crucial support system in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Three primary reasons for Russia’s alarm:
-
Threat to Shahed Drones: Successful airstrikes on Iranian factories and logistics centers could leave the Russian military without access to inexpensive kamikaze drones.
-
Technological Failure: The inability of Iranian defense systems to intercept attacks has raised concerns not only in Tehran but also in Moscow.
-
Diplomatic Isolation: Losing Iran would dismantle the “anti-Western bloc” that Russia has been carefully constructing.
China has also voiced support for Russia’s position, expressing concerns over Iran’s territorial integrity. However, many members of the Security Council reacted skeptically to these statements, reminding that Iranian weapons and Russian aggression are significant destabilizing factors in global affairs.
The meeting concluded without any resolutions, but it underscored a notable point: when the “axis of evil” feels threatened, it quickly recalls the rules it has previously ignored.
It is worth noting that the situation in the Middle East escalated into a significant military confrontation on February 28, 2026.
Russia has condemned U.S. and Israeli military actions during a UN Security Council meeting, demanding an immediate ceasefire. The session highlighted Russia's complex relationship with Iran and its strategic interests in the region.
