Von der Leyen made the announcement via social media, emphasizing the critical need for regional security and stability, stating, “It is crucial to prevent further escalation due to unjustified Iranian attacks on partners in the region.”
In a related development, a spokesperson for the Cypriot presidency of the EU Council indicated that ambassadors from EU member states will gather for an extraordinary session on Sunday, March 1, to discuss the ongoing situation in the Middle East.
Military Operations Against Iran
On February 28, Israel conducted airstrikes on Tehran, the capital of Iran. Following this, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that American forces had initiated a “major combat operation” against Iran, aimed at neutralizing imminent threats posed by the Iranian regime. He accused Iranian authorities of financing and training militant groups in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Hamas in Palestine, asserting that the operation’s objectives include dismantling Iran’s missile industry and navy, as well as preventing global destabilization.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed to have launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and also attacked U.S. military bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
In light of the U.S. military actions against Iran, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
The European Union has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East amidst these developments.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commented on the situation, suggesting that it is fair to give Iranians a chance to rid themselves of a “terrorist regime” and to ensure the safety of all nations affected by attacks from Iran.
