In the early hours of February 26, Ukraine experienced a significant wave of attacks by Russian forces, resulting in extensive damage across eight regions. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported numerous injuries, including among children, as both residential buildings and critical infrastructure were targeted.
Zelensky detailed the assault in a Telegram post, stating that the Russian military launched a total of 420 drones, primarily of the Shahed type, along with 39 missiles, including 11 ballistic ones. The attacks were aimed at civilian areas and vital infrastructure, highlighting the ongoing threat to the Ukrainian populace.
“Last night, Russia again targeted critical infrastructure and ordinary residential buildings. This is a clear indication of their continued aggression against our people,” Zelensky wrote.
The strikes particularly impacted gas infrastructure in Poltava and electricity substations in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Emergency services are currently working to mitigate the aftermath of the bombardments in regions such as Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Kirovohrad, Vinnytsia, and the capital city itself.
Zelensky acknowledged that many missiles were intercepted, thanks to the operational support from Ukraine’s partners, particularly in relation to air defense systems discussed during the recent Ramstein meeting. However, he emphasized the need for continued vigilance and support.
“Unfortunately, there were also hits. This means we must work even more actively. The cold has not fully retreated, and air defense missiles are needed daily as Russia attempts to cripple our energy infrastructure. I thank everyone who understands this and provides assistance,” he added.
During the night of the attacks, air raid alerts were issued in Kyiv and several other regions due to the threat posed by Russian drones and ballistic missiles. Explosions were reported in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia, with at least 16 injuries confirmed in Kharkiv and surrounding areas. Damage to residential areas was also noted in Vinnytsia, where approximately 20 homes were affected.
In Kryvyi Rih, a high-rise building sustained damage, leading to a fire and additional injuries. The Poltava region reported damage from falling debris and direct strikes, but no casualties were reported. In Dnipropetrovsk, attacks targeted the Kryvorizkyi and Nikopol districts, resulting in injuries and damage to private homes and vehicles.
Additionally, Russian forces struck energy infrastructure in Odesa, causing damage to facilities in the southern region. During this extensive aerial assault, Polish and allied aviation patrolled Polish airspace to monitor the situation.
The recent Russian attacks on Ukraine have led to significant damage and numerous injuries across multiple regions. President Zelensky highlighted the ongoing threat to civilian infrastructure and the need for continued international support.
