The President of the European Council, António Costa, has formally addressed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, urging compliance with a collective decision regarding a loan for Ukraine.
According to a report by Reuters, Costa’s letter reminded Orbán that the loan was officially approved by EU leaders during a summit in December, making it a binding commitment for all member states.
“When leaders reach a consensus, they are bound by their decision. Any breach of this obligation undermines the principle of sincere cooperation,” Costa emphasized. He further asserted that no member state is entitled to undermine trust in collective decisions of the European Council by exercising a veto after consensus has been achieved.
António Costa has called on Hungary to adhere to a previously agreed-upon loan for Ukraine, highlighting the importance of collective decision-making within the EU. His remarks underscore the need for member states to honor commitments made during summits.
