Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans has stated that Russia’s imperial ambitions extend beyond Ukraine, aiming to weaken and divide European nations through hybrid methods. His comments were made during an interview with Ukrinform.
Brekelmans emphasized the need for collective awareness regarding the ongoing Russian aggression, asserting that it poses a threat not only to Ukraine but to Europe as a whole. He remarked, “We must all recognize that we are facing the same Russian aggression — and Russia’s imperial ambitions do not stop at Ukraine; they reach further into Europe.”
He further elaborated that Russia seeks not just to re-establish its sphere of influence but also to undermine the stability of the rest of Europe through various hybrid tactics. According to Brekelmans, this challenge is something Europe encounters on a daily basis.
The minister also highlighted that it is not Ukraine that should be thanking its allies, but rather Europe should express gratitude to Ukraine for paying the highest price in defending its territory and, by extension, the freedom of the rest of Europe.
During his visits to Ukraine, Brekelmans expressed admiration for the courage of Ukrainian soldiers and their ability to resist Russian aggression. He stated, “Each of my visits has given me new energy to strengthen support for Ukraine and accelerate assistance.”
Looking ahead, Brekelmans confirmed that the new Dutch government will continue its support for Ukraine, which is secured in the budget for several years. He assured that Ukraine can count on the Netherlands in the coming years, and that Russia should understand this support is unwavering.
