Casualties Rise Following Russian Attack in Kyiv Region

The number of casualties from a Russian assault on the Kyiv region on February 22 has increased to 17, as reported by Mykola Kalashnyk, the head of the regional military administration.

Kalashnyk indicated that damage has been recorded in several districts, including Brovary, Obukhiv, Boryspil, Bucha, Fastiv, and Vyshhorod. The most significant destruction occurred in the Boryspil, Bucha, and Fastiv areas.

According to Kalashnyk, over 100 residential properties have been affected, including private homes and apartments in multi-storey buildings. “This number is not final, as more damage reports continue to come in from homeowners. The extent of the damage varies, ranging from completely destroyed structures to broken windows, damaged roofs, and facades. Business properties, warehouses, office spaces, and garage cooperatives have also sustained damage,” he stated.

During the night of February 22, Russian forces launched a combined strike on Ukraine. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that 297 drones, including 200 Shahed drones, and 50 missiles of various types were used in the attack. Ukrainian forces confirmed hits from 14 missiles and 23 drones across 14 locations, with debris from downed drones falling in five areas.

President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the Russian military targeted Kyiv and surrounding regions, as well as Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Poltava, and Sumy. He stated that the primary aim of the strikes was energy infrastructure, with reports of damage to railways and residential buildings.

Local authorities reported that Russian forces struck energy infrastructure in Odesa and Mykolaiv. In the Kyiv region, one person has been confirmed dead, and 15 others injured, including a woman and a child in the suburbs of Kyiv. Additionally, two individuals were reported injured in Dnipropetrovsk.

Russian military forces have consistently targeted Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various weaponry, including drones, missiles, and multiple-launch rocket systems.

Ukrainian authorities and international organizations classify these attacks as war crimes, emphasizing their deliberate nature. Strikes on essential services and healthcare facilities aimed at depriving civilians of electricity, heating, water supply, communication, and medical assistance are viewed as genocidal actions.

The Russian government denies that its military conducts targeted strikes on civilian infrastructure, asserting that it does not intentionally harm civilians or destroy hospitals, schools, kindergartens, or energy and water supply facilities.

A recent Russian attack on the Kyiv region has resulted in 17 casualties and extensive damage to residential and business properties. Ukrainian officials classify the strikes as war crimes, citing their deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure.
