Red Cross Reports Thousands Missing in Ukraine Conflict

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has registered tens of thousands of Ukrainians as missing due to the ongoing conflict, according to ICRC Director General Pierre Krähenbühl in an interview with Radio Liberty.

Krähenbühl noted that the total number of inquiries from families in both Ukraine and Russia regarding missing persons has surpassed 200,000. This figure includes individuals who may be in captivity as well as those who might have died in combat.

“This represents a significant group of registered individuals. These are the numbers we have at this point,” Krähenbühl stated.

The ICRC is maintaining communication with the families of the missing and is actively working to clarify the fates of those registered. In February 2025, Ukraine’s Commissioner for Missing Persons in Special Circumstances, Artur Dobroserdov, reported that the registry contains information on 62,948 individuals, encompassing both civilians and military personnel.

Since May 2023, Ukraine has implemented a Unified Registry of Missing Persons, which compiles data on military personnel currently being sought.

In related news, a film titled “Return My Name,” produced by Radio Liberty, premiered at the Zhovten Cinema in Kyiv, focusing on the efforts to recover the remains of missing individuals.

The ICRC has identified tens of thousands of Ukrainians as missing amid the ongoing conflict, with over 200,000 inquiries received from families. Efforts to clarify the status of these individuals continue, alongside the establishment of a Unified Registry for missing persons in Ukraine.
