UN Report Highlights Rising Toll of Women and Civilian Casualties in Ukraine War

A recent report from UN Women reveals that since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, over 5,000 women and girls have lost their lives, with an additional 14,000 sustaining injuries. This alarming data underscores the severe impact of the ongoing conflict on vulnerable populations.

The year 2025 has been marked as particularly deadly, with actual figures likely exceeding those reported. The UN has noted that alongside the intensification of military actions and energy attacks, a third factor exacerbating the crisis is the significant reduction in funding for organizations dedicated to women’s rights.

According to the report, one-third of surveyed women’s rights organizations have indicated that they may only survive for six more months at the current funding levels. Projections suggest that these organizations could face a loss of at least $52.9 million by the end of 2026, severely limiting their ability to provide essential services.

“Organizations protecting women’s rights warn that by 2026, they may have to cease vital services for at least 63,000 women and girls in need. The most affected will be those already in precarious situations, including women and girls in frontline and rural areas, elderly women, and those with disabilities, who will be cut off from protection, humanitarian aid, and recovery efforts during a time of escalating danger,” the UN report states.

Casualties in Ukraine

According to a report by The Guardian, civilian casualties in Ukraine due to Russian attacks increased by 26% in 2025, with 2,248 civilians killed and 12,493 injured. The average number of casualties per attack has also risen.

Further analysis from The New York Times estimates that total casualties in the conflict, encompassing both Ukrainian and Russian losses, could surpass two million by spring of this year, with approximately two-thirds of these fatalities attributed to Russian forces.
