Zelensky Discusses Progress and Challenges in Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported advancements in military discussions between Ukraine and Russia during recent peace negotiations in Geneva. However, he noted significant differences in political stances regarding the Donbas region among the parties involved.

Zelensky stated that the military dialogue has moved closer to an agreement, emphasizing that a document detailing monitoring procedures post-ceasefire is in the works. “We are nearing a result on military matters, which is promising,” he remarked.

In contrast, he described the political discussions as more complex, highlighting a lack of consensus even within the trilateral format. “We have three distinct viewpoints regarding territorial issues,” he explained.

During the talks in Saudi Arabia in 2025, the United States proposed a ceasefire, suggesting that both sides halt at the current line of demarcation and resolve territorial disputes through diplomatic means. Zelensky mentioned that the parties have shifted from the initial U.S. stance advocating for a free economic zone.

“We responded that we adhere to the same American position that was proposed in Saudi Arabia. My stance is to support any format that keeps the dialogue ongoing, but that does not mean I will accept everything,” he clarified.

The President also addressed Russia’s proposal for Ukraine to withdraw from the Donbas, asserting that Kyiv cannot accept such a condition and will not legally recognize the territories as Russian. “We cannot simply leave. How is that even possible? This is our territory, including the currently occupied areas. Yes, they are temporarily occupied, and it is painful for us, but we must remain firm where we stand. That alone is a significant compromise,” Zelensky stated.

When asked if he would consider ceding any territory during his presidency, Zelensky firmly rejected the notion of voluntarily relinquishing land. “I cannot support such an idea. Even under extremely difficult circumstances, I doubt our people would be prepared for that, especially considering the tens of thousands of Ukrainians who have died defending this part of Ukraine,” he said.

The President emphasized that the issue of Donbas transcends mere territory; it involves people, values, and the essence of Ukraine’s independence. He added, “We need security guarantees, but even with those, no one can assure us that Putin won’t come again.”

In conclusion, Zelensky stressed the importance of considering future generations, asserting that it is crucial not to leave future leaders with a “blank sheet of paper.” He called for robust security guarantees, particularly from the United States, the presence of European representatives in Ukraine, and a strengthened Ukrainian army of 800,000 personnel. “A key aspect is our defense lines. When we discuss security in relation to Donbas and the Donetsk region, I also think about the strong defense lines we need to maintain there,” he concluded.

President Zelensky has outlined progress in military negotiations with Russia but highlighted significant political disagreements regarding the Donbas region. He firmly rejected any notion of ceding territory, emphasizing the importance of security guarantees for Ukraine's future.
