The United States has yet to issue licenses for the production of Patriot missile systems in Europe, despite previous commitments. This was highlighted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during an evening address.
Zelensky emphasized the need for Ukrainian diplomats and Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to intensify efforts to secure missile supplies for the country’s air defense systems. He indicated that a meeting with Fedorov had been held to outline Ukraine’s priorities regarding military needs.
In addition, Zelensky noted that Ukraine intends to advocate for European nations to establish their own missile production capabilities. While he acknowledged that some European countries are already expanding their production facilities, he expressed concern over the pace of these developments and the overall production capacity.
“Ukraine has been discussing the necessity of establishing sufficient missile production in Europe, particularly for the Patriot systems, with the United States for years. Promises were made regarding licensing, but the U.S. has ultimately not followed through. We have offered to produce missiles in Ukraine and collaborate with NATO partners in the region, including Romania and Poland,” Zelensky stated.
He expressed confidence that Europe could achieve the necessary production volumes but stressed that faster progress would be beneficial for all parties involved.
