Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced the development of a new sanctions package targeting Russian individuals involved in using sports to support the ongoing conflict.
In a recent address, Zelensky stated, “We are preparing a new sanctions package against Russian figures who are working for the war and putting sports at the service of the conflict. The documents are already prepared.” He emphasized that this initiative aims to send a clear message globally that the support of aggression cannot be ignored.
The president highlighted a recent incident where Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych was disqualified from the 2026 Olympics after wearing a helmet featuring images of 20 Ukrainian athletes who lost their lives due to Russian aggression. Zelensky awarded Heraskevych the Order of Freedom in recognition of his actions.
Zelensky asserted, “When Ukrainians are prohibited from even mentioning the victims of Russian aggression at the Olympics, it signifies a global regression from justice. We will restore justice. The decree regarding sanctions will be issued soon.”
Ukrainian President Zelensky is set to introduce a sanctions package aimed at Russian sports figures linked to the war. This move follows the disqualification of an athlete for honoring victims of aggression, highlighting ongoing tensions in the sports arena.
