Ukrainian President Zelensky Discusses Leadership and Elections Amid Ongoing Conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has emphasized the generational difference between himself and Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting that Putin’s time in power is limited. In an interview with Politico at the Munich Security Conference, Zelensky expressed confidence in his position, stating, “I am a free person. I am younger than Putin. Believe me, that matters. He does not have much time left.”

During the conversation, Zelensky addressed the topic of potential elections in Ukraine, revealing that a significant majority of Ukrainians oppose holding elections while the country is engaged in conflict. “Ninety percent of Ukrainians are against elections right now. If anyone is interested in what Ukrainians think,” he noted.

Zelensky also mentioned that if former U.S. President Donald Trump could facilitate a ceasefire with Russia lasting two to three months, it would create an opportunity for elections. He outlined three steps he believes Trump should take to exert pressure on Putin: provide strong security guarantees for Ukraine, offer a reconstruction package, and directly call on Putin to cease hostilities.

He added, “If Putin says ‘no,’ Trump must ensure we receive everything we need to protect ourselves and remain strong. However, I believe we need to end the war, not prolong the fighting.”

In a recent interview, President Zelensky asserted his generational difference from Putin and discussed the unlikelihood of elections in Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. He proposed that a ceasefire facilitated by Trump could pave the way for elections, while emphasizing the need for strong security guarantees for Ukraine.
