Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has emphasized the importance of a forthcoming loan package of €90 billion for Ukraine, aimed at addressing the country’s immediate needs, particularly in air defense.
During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Munich, Frederiksen highlighted the escalating urgency of Ukraine’s requirements. She stated that the European Union must be prepared to expedite financial assistance to meet these demands.
“You are currently experiencing a shortage of air defense resources and other necessities. It would be beneficial to compile a list of all your needs. Once the funds are available, we can quickly provide them for payment—on an expedited basis,”
Frederiksen remarked, underscoring the critical nature of Ukraine’s situation.
The European Union anticipates that the first disbursement from this loan will occur in the early second quarter of 2026. On February 11, the European Parliament expressed its support for the European Commission’s proposal to extend a €90 billion credit to Ukraine, aimed at financing military and budgetary expenditures.
For the loan agreement to take effect, the European Council must officially adopt the legislative package associated with the funding. On December 19, the European Union summit approved a decision for collective borrowing to provide Ukraine with €90 billion, which is expected to cover two-thirds of Ukraine’s needs in both the budgetary and defense sectors for 2026-2027.
On February 4, ambassadors from EU member states, during a meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper), finalized mechanisms for providing the €90 billion loan to Ukraine in 2026-2027, including allowing third countries to participate in the process.
