Apple Develops Smart Glasses to Compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban Products

Apple is reportedly developing a new line of smart glasses, tentatively named Apple Glass, which will directly compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban products. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into wearable technology.

The first generation of Apple Glass is not expected to feature full augmented reality (AR) displays. Instead, the device will include cameras for capturing photos and videos, the ability to make phone calls, play music, and manage notifications from an iPhone.

A key feature of the glasses will be an updated version of Siri in iOS 27. With the integrated cameras and Apple Intelligence, the voice assistant will be able to analyze the user’s surroundings in real-time and respond to queries based on visual input.

Apple aims to position the glasses as recognizable accessories, akin to AirPods and Apple Watch. Designers are considering four distinct frame styles:

  • bulky rectangular frames (similar to classic Ray-Bans);
  • thin rectangular frames;
  • large oval or round frames;
  • slim round frames in a compact design.

Rather than using standard plastic, the developers plan to employ a more premium acetate material. The cameras will feature vertically oriented lenses with backlighting. The glasses will be available in black, dark blue, and light brown.

The smart glasses represent a small component of Apple’s new ecosystem. The company is also working on two additional devices that will support computer vision:

  • AirPods Pro with cameras: These headphones will incorporate infrared sensors for spatial scanning.
  • AI Pendant: A compact device equipped with cameras and microphones that can be worn on clothing.

The launch of Apple Glass is anticipated between 2026 and 2027, while the AI pendant is expected to debut no earlier than 2027.

Apple is developing smart glasses as part of its strategy to integrate AI into wearable technology. The glasses will feature various functionalities but will not include full AR capabilities. Additional devices, including AI-enhanced AirPods and a wearable pendant, are also in the works.
