Ukraine’s use of medium-range drones has significantly impacted Russian supply lines, particularly in the southern regions of the conflict. Reports indicate that the number of drone strikes has surged dramatically over the past year, with a 28-fold increase in missions aimed at disrupting logistical operations.
According to a CNN analysis, new generations of Ukrainian drones are targeting critical infrastructure, including bridges and fuel trucks, effectively complicating Russia’s military logistics. This strategy aims to thwart Moscow’s plans for a summer offensive by targeting supply routes essential for Russian forces.
French OSINT analyst Clément Molin, alongside the volunteer group GeoConfirmed and CNN’s open-source intelligence team, has geolocated and assessed approximately 150 strikes on Russian fuel tankers and military vehicles. However, they note that many attacks may not have been documented.
The majority of these drone strikes have occurred since early May, coinciding with an increase in attacks on other strategic targets, such as port facilities and naval vessels. Molin stated, “Ukrainians have acquired the means to initiate a large-scale drone campaign to sever Crimea from its main supply routes, complicating the logistical situation for Russia across the front lines.”
Impact of Ukrainian Drone Missions
The Ukrainian Armed Forces’ drone units report that the escalation in medium-range strike missions is part of a broader strategy to diminish Russia’s offensive capabilities. This involves creating severe logistical challenges for Russian troops and targeting their air defense systems in occupied territories to facilitate longer-range drone operations.
As a result of these strikes, several routes between Russia and occupied Ukrainian territories have become perilous for military transport. This has led to reported shortages of fuel and ammunition among Russian forces in the south, further complicating their operational objectives.
Restricted Routes
Analyst Mick Ryan, a former senior officer in the Australian Army, noted that Ukrainian drones have gained control over airspace above three major highways leading to Crimea. Some of these routes, crucial for supplying Russian troops, have been deemed unsafe for military movement due to the threat posed by medium-range drones.
In particular, the occupying authorities in Luhansk have announced the suspension of transport on two highways from Belgorod and Rostov-on-Don in Russia, which serve as key supply routes. Additionally, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on the port of Mariupol, a strategic industrial hub on the Sea of Azov.
Analyst Rob Lee remarked that the Ukrainian attacks have heightened the significance of the Kerch Bridge for sustaining logistics to Crimea. He speculated that Ukraine might attempt to target the bridge using drones or domestically produced missiles.
Communication Disruptions and Tactical Pressure
The disruption of Starlink satellite communications for Russian forces has also aided Ukraine’s drone campaign. However, analysts and some Ukrainian military personnel acknowledge that this advantage may not last indefinitely.
Despite this, Ryan believes that the three-tiered application of drones—on the battlefield, against supply lines, and deep within Russian territory—intensifies pressure on Russian forces, reduces their offensive capabilities, and shapes the battlefield for future Ukrainian operations.

Previous reports from The Telegraph highlighted that Ukraine has transformed the last land route for Russia to Crimea into a “death road,” with continuous strikes along the R-280 highway making it perilous for Russian convoys. Business Insider also reported on Ukraine’s efforts to dismantle key logistical arteries using low-cost drones, noting that strikes on bridges in Armyansk, Chonhar, and Henichesk could significantly affect Russian logistics in southern Ukraine.
