The Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, has announced his decision to return the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. This action underscores the complex dynamics between the two nations amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Bodnar emphasized that Ukrainians view Poland primarily as a friend, ally, and partner, recalling the significant support received at the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine. He noted that both Kyiv and Warsaw share numerous mutual interests, particularly in the realm of security.
During his tenure, Bodnar has focused on fostering the development of Polish-Ukrainian relations and addressing various issues collaboratively. He remarked on the considerable progress made over the past 18 months, yet he expressed deep concern regarding the decision to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the prestigious Polish award.
“I cannot remain indifferent to a decision I consider historically unjust. Understanding the emotions prevailing in Poland, I cannot accept that the President of Ukraine, a friend of Poland and a leader defending against Russian aggression, has been deprived of the highest Polish honor,” Bodnar stated.
He further articulated that, in the context of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, the decision is perceived as particularly painful and emotional, representing a gesture towards the entire Ukrainian populace.
“Under these circumstances, I am compelled to return the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Despite the current situation, I believe that wisdom will prevail over emotions, and mutual respect will triumph over political circumstances,” Bodnar added.
He reiterated the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between Ukraine and Poland, despite differing perspectives. Bodnar urged both nations to avoid losing the ability to listen to one another and to seek solutions through dialogue.
“Let us remember that our disputes always benefit the enemy—Moscow. I once again call for an open conversation. I am confident that with goodwill, we will find reasonable solutions,” he concluded.
