US and Iran Move Towards Potential Peace Agreement

On June 12, 2023, the United States and Iran indicated that a ceasefire agreement may soon be finalized. A senior official from the US administration confirmed that both parties have agreed on the text of the document, with expectations for a preliminary signing in the coming days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that while modifications to the document are still possible, the preliminary agreement suggests that Iran is emerging from the conflict in a stronger position. He remarked, “Iran is the victor in the war with the United States.”

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, the proposed memorandum includes provisions for the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US maritime blockade on Iranian ports. Following this, discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program, which was cited by former President Trump as a key reason for the conflict, are expected to commence.

The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, noted that the agreement aligns with Trump’s primary objectives and places the negotiation process in a favorable position.

However, various Western, Pakistani, and Iranian sources have reported that the terms of the draft may primarily benefit Iran. This has led to criticism of Trump, who has dismissed such claims as inaccurate.

Araqchi further emphasized that Iran, along with Oman, will maintain control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, asserting, “Our sword will always hang over the Strait of Hormuz.”

The draft agreement reportedly stipulates that the US will unfreeze billions of dollars in Iranian assets and ease sanctions on oil exports in exchange for Iran’s commitment to open the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.

Additionally, Iran’s nuclear program is set to become the focus of separate negotiations lasting 60 days. The US official indicated that the ultimate goal of the agreement is the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program, requiring the destruction and removal of its stockpile of enriched uranium. The terms also include an inspection mechanism to ensure compliance with the agreements over the long term.

Nevertheless, Araqchi insisted that Tehran will not agree to dismantle its nuclear program and is advocating for the reduction of its existing enriched uranium stock.

The US official also refuted claims that the agreement includes reparations for Iran or a withdrawal of US demands regarding limitations on Iran’s missile program.

Prior to this, President Trump had mentioned that a signing ceremony with Iran could take place over the weekend in Europe, while the Iranian Foreign Minister stated that the agreement is “closer than ever.” Trump also indicated that he would cancel planned strikes against Iran as the negotiating teams had finalized the “final points” of the agreement.

The United States and Iran are nearing a potential ceasefire agreement, with both sides reportedly agreeing on key terms. The deal could lead to the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and discussions on Iran's nuclear program.
