Recent comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have shed light on a significant rift within the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to Zelensky, there are factions within the Kremlin that are divided on whether to continue military operations or seek an end to the war.
Zelensky emphasized that while some advisors advocate for the continuation of hostilities, others recognize the dire state of the Russian economy and support a cessation of fighting. He specifically pointed to the concerns of Russian business leaders, who are increasingly aware of the economic repercussions stemming from the war.
“Businessmen understand that the Russian economy is in a terrible condition,” Zelensky stated, highlighting the growing pressure on the Kremlin from various sectors.
In outlining potential pathways to peace, Zelensky articulated three critical conditions that he believes could facilitate the end of the conflict:
- Western nations, including Europe, Canada, and the United States, must maintain sanctions and increase pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet and other economic sectors;
- Ukraine must remain resilient on the battlefield;
- Pressure on Russia should be intensified across all fronts.
He noted, “If Western countries do not lift sanctions, strengthen pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet and other sectors, and Ukraine remains strong on the battlefield, we will be closer to peace.” Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s position on negotiations, stating, “We are ready to talk, but we will not give up our territory.”
The European Union has also supported increased sanctions against Russia. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has indicated that the financial damage inflicted on Russia due to these sanctions has already surpassed $1.5 trillion, with the bloc preparing new restrictions targeting 80 organizations and individuals.
In response to perceived external threats, the Kremlin has heightened security measures. Reports indicate that Russian security services temporarily disabled surveillance systems around Putin following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, fearing the capabilities of modern intelligence technologies.
