Drone Strike Damages Nuclear Waste Storage Facility in Ukraine

On June 7, 2026, a drone strike targeted the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel in Ukraine, resulting in damage to the container reception building. Fortunately, the radiation levels at the site remain within normal limits, and there were no reported injuries.

The state nuclear energy company, Energoatom, confirmed that a fire covering approximately 40 square meters was quickly contained and extinguished. Officials reported that no personnel were harmed during the incident.

Radiation levels at the Centralized Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel continue to be stable, with no threats identified for the surrounding population or environment. However, the attack on this nuclear infrastructure raises significant concerns regarding nuclear and radiation safety, constituting a violation of international law. The situation is under constant monitoring by the relevant authorities.

The incident follows a widespread missile and drone assault by Russian forces on October 30, targeting energy facilities across four regions of Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, a total of 653 drones of various types and 52 missiles were launched during this attack. Ukrainian air defense successfully intercepted 592 drones and 31 missiles.

Direct hits from the strikes included 16 missiles and 63 drones across 20 locations, with debris from intercepted aerial targets falling in 19 different regions.

A drone strike on a nuclear waste storage facility in Ukraine has raised safety concerns, although radiation levels remain normal. This incident is part of ongoing military hostilities, including a recent extensive attack by Russian forces on energy infrastructure.
