Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that the United Nations Security Council will convene an urgent session on June 8, at Ukraine’s request, in response to a significant assault carried out by Russia on the night of June 5.
In a post on social media platform X, Sybiha emphasized that the recent wave of Russian strikes serves as a stark reminder that Moscow continues to choose escalation over peace, and terror over diplomacy.
He further highlighted the necessity of sustained international pressure on Russia to restore respect for the UN Charter and advance President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for ending the conflict.
“We thank our partners for their ongoing support and contribution towards achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,” the minister stated.
Details surrounding the June 5 attack reveal that the Russian military targeted Ukraine with two guided aviation missiles, Kh-59/69, and 216 strike drones, including types such as Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, imitation drones known as Parody, and loitering munitions called Banderoil.
As of 7:30 AM, Ukrainian defense forces, including aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare units, and mobile fire groups, successfully intercepted or suppressed 198 Russian drones across northern, southern, and eastern regions of the country.
Reports indicate that 16 strike drones hit 13 locations, with debris falling in 12 areas. However, the Russian guided missiles failed to reach their intended targets.
The UN Security Council is set to meet on June 8 to address a recent Russian attack on Ukraine, as reported by Ukraine's Foreign Minister. The assault involved multiple drones and missiles, with Ukrainian forces successfully intercepting many of them.
