The United Nations Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on June 8 in response to recent large-scale attacks by Russia on Ukraine. This meeting has been called at the request of the Ukrainian government.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the meeting, stating that the latest wave of Russian strikes serves as a stark reminder of Moscow’s preference for escalation over diplomacy. He emphasized the ongoing need for international pressure on Russia to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and to support Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal for a ceasefire.
“We thank our partners for their continuous support and contribution towards achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace,” Sybiha concluded.
In a related development, President Zelensky recently sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressing Ukraine’s readiness to end the conflict through direct negotiations. He proposed to set a date and location for discussions aimed at halting hostilities.
In response, Putin stated during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that he sees no point in meeting, asserting that such a meeting would only benefit Ukraine in its efforts to stop Russia’s advance.
Additionally, on June 2, Russia launched another combined attack on Ukraine, resulting in significant damage to civilian infrastructure, particularly in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Kharkiv.
The UN Security Council will meet to discuss Russia's recent attacks on Ukraine, following a request from Kyiv. Ukrainian officials continue to advocate for international support and a ceasefire amid escalating military actions.
