Ukraine Denies Russian Claims of Attack on Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant

The Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine have dismissed Russian allegations regarding an attack on the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant, situated near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). They characterized these claims as a manipulation aimed at influencing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to a statement from Ukrainian military officials, the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not target nuclear energy facilities or critical infrastructure linked to the safety of atomic sites. In contrast, they accused Russia of systematically exploiting the occupied territory of the ZNPP for nuclear intimidation.

“Any attempts by Russian propaganda to use reports of combat actions to blame the Defense Forces of Ukraine are yet another information manipulation. Ukraine strictly adheres to international humanitarian law and does not engage in actions that could pose a threat to nuclear safety,”

the statement read. The Southern Defense Forces emphasized that the only source of risk to nuclear and radiation safety at the ZNPP is the presence of Russian troops, weapons, and military infrastructure in and around the facility.

The IAEA reported that the Russian administration of the plant informed them that the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant was under “heavy shelling” on the morning of June 4. This plant plays a crucial role in supplying electricity to the ZNPP.

IAEA mission staff at the nuclear site noted observing smoke in the direction of the thermal power plant and hearing sounds of combat.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed “deep concern” over the reports of shelling and called for an immediate cessation of attacks.

Since 2022, all six reactors at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant have been in a state of cold shutdown. The IAEA maintains a continuous presence at the site to monitor safety amid ongoing hostilities.

Russian forces captured the largest nuclear power plant in Europe during the early weeks of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The facility has not been generating electricity, and both Ukraine and Russia frequently accuse each other of actions that threaten nuclear safety.

The Southern Defense Forces of Ukraine have refuted Russian claims of an attack on the Zaporizhzhia Thermal Power Plant, labeling them as disinformation. The IAEA has raised concerns about the situation, emphasizing the ongoing risks associated with military activities near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
